Davao Heat vs. Your Jewelry: An El Niño Survival Guide

El Niño is here and Davao is basically a frying pan. Here's what the heat is doing to your jewelry, and how to keep it cool.

Davao Heat vs. Your Jewelry: An El Niño Survival Guide

PAGASA says a very strong El Niño could stick around until early 2027. Translation: Davao is in its frying pan era. ☀️ The electric fan is on max, the aircon is working overtime, and your jewelry? It's suffering in silence.

🌡️ Jewelry Heat Advisory

Issued by the Marico Jewelry Weather Bureau. (Not affiliated with PAGASA. Obviously.)

Hazard #1

Sweat

What's happening
You sweat just walking to the jeep.
Effect on your jewelry
Salt and oils build up, so gold looks dull and grimy, especially chains and the backs of rings.
Safety tip
Wipe your pieces with a soft cloth at the end of the day.

Hazard #2

Sunscreen and lotion

What's happening
SPF 50 is non-negotiable.
Effect on your jewelry
It leaves a film that dulls gold and clouds stones.
Safety tip
Put your jewelry on after sunscreen and lotion have dried.

Hazard #3

Swollen fingers

What's happening
Heat makes fingers puff up, especially later in the day.
Effect on your jewelry
Rings feel tight, or get stuck.
Safety tip
Cool your hands with cold water and raise them for a bit before taking a ring off. Always tight? It may need resizing.

Hazard #4

Pool and beach

What's happening
Everyone's escaping to Samal or the nearest pool.
Effect on your jewelry
Chlorine can harm gold over time, cold water shrinks fingers so rings slip off, and sand scratches.
Safety tip
Leave your rings at home, or zipped in your bag.
Yellow gold ring with a round cluster of small stones on white paper

White gold, are you okay?

White gold gets its bright finish from plating. Sweat, sunscreen, and everyday friction wear it down, so in hot months white gold can start looking a little yellowish sooner. Good news: re-plating takes minutes to hours, and it comes back shining.

Your El Niño survival kit

  • Jewelry goes on last, after sunscreen, lotion, and perfume.
  • Take rings off for swimming, workouts, and heavy-sweat chores.
  • Give it a bath. Warm water, a little mild soap, a soft brush, then pat dry. This works for plain gold and most diamond or moissanite pieces.
  • Store it dry and separate. A small pouch per piece, and a silica gel packet helps with the humidity.
  • Pearls and softer stones don't love heat or direct sun, so keep them cool.
  • Stay hydrated. That one's for you, not the jewelry.

Quick answers

Does hot weather damage gold jewelry?

Normal hot weather won't melt or damage gold. The problems come with it: sweat, sunscreen, and swelling dull your jewelry and make rings feel tight.

Why do my rings feel tight when it's hot?

Fingers swell in heat, especially later in the day. If a ring is tight even when it's cool, it may need resizing.

Can I swim with my gold jewelry?

It's better not to. Chlorine can harm gold over time, and rings can slip off in cold water.

Why does my white gold look yellow?

Its bright white finish comes from plating, which wears down with sweat and friction. Re-plating brings it back, usually within minutes to hours.

Jewelry need a cool-down?

Cleaning, polishing, and re-plating take minutes to hours. Walk in, no appointment needed.
